The Equality of Art and Cigars.

Tijana Titin

Tonight I have brought together two art forms.  One is by introducing Tijana Titin, a contemporary artist of the Saatchi Online School. http://www.saatchiart.com/tijanatitin

cigar rollers

The other art form is the Torcedor and how a cigar is rolled.  http://www.madehow.com/Volume-3/Cigar.html#ixzz4Eh0B2XmJ.

Both are confirmed artists.  Both results have meanings to the creator.  Both are unique in that their work cannot be duplicated.  Tijana’s skill is unique as is the Torcedor’s craft.  Never are the results the same – only similar in either case.

Both expressions can be controversial.  Both can be detrimental to your health.  Titin’s work can harm in the psychological sense. and the Torecedor’s resultant cigar can harm in the physical realm.  The mental malady can scatter throughout the body and cause deleterious physical ramifications.  Tobacco can radiate throughout any part of the body, due to the effects of smoking cigars.  Which one is the government trying to control?  Why is one getting a pass and the other persecution?  Light up a cigar, go to Tijana’s site and really think this through.  I’d love to know your thoughts.  Have you any to share?

“My work is focused on Human Beings, their position in the contemporary world and their interpersonal relations. I observe them from different perspectives and am making my own, nuanced take. Similarly to Francis Bacon, who said: “I would like my pictures to look as if a human being had passed between them, like a snail leaving its trail of the human presence… as a snail leaves its slime”, I too am attempting to reach the human essence in my works. I want to give people a reason to pause, to reflect, to take a deep look into themselves. That is where the feelings are and that is what links us together.heart TT

There we are the most vulnerable; there we are the closest to each other. Dealing with inner worlds interest me – a visualization of the invisible. In all my works I use both figuration and abstraction. My aim is to give a few directions to the viewer, without revealing the final destination or becoming too illustrative. Figures are often appearing from and then disappearing back into an abstract space, which causes the feeling of constant flow within the painting. The space, however, I don’t consider to be a classical background. For me, it represents the internal of the figures. The spaces and the figures in most of my works are one being.” (Titin’s site)

The Torcedor

cigar rollers color“Fine cigars are rolled by hand. Cigar rolling is skilled work: it may take a year for a roller to become proficient. The filler must be packed evenly for the cigar to burn smoothly, and the wrapper should be wound in an even spiral around the cigar. Hand cigar makers usually work in small factories. Each worker sits at a small table with a tray of sorted tobacco leaves on it and space to roll out the cigar. First the worker selects from two to six leaves for the filler. These are placed one on top of the other and rolled into a bunch. Then the worker places the bunch on the binder leaf and rolls the binder leaf cylindrically around the filler. The unfinished cigars are placed in an open wooden mold that holds them in shape until they can be wrapped.

cigar artWrapping is the most difficult step. The worker takes the partially completed cigar out of the mold and places it on the wrapper leaf. With a special rounded knife called a chaveta, the worker trims off any irregularities from the filler. Then the worker rolls the wrapper leaf around the filler and binder three and a half times, and secures it at the end with a small amount of vegetable paste. The worker cuts a small round piece out of a different wrapper leaf. This is sometimes done by tracing around a coin. This circle is then attached to the end of the cigar with paste. The worker has completed the cigar, though it still must be tested, sorted and packed.” (Wiki)

Both are expressions of the soul.  There is no difference in the two forms of art.  So why are the extremists choosing one over the other to defame?
